There is a particular kind of silence in a Cypriot forest.
The air is cooler. The light changes beneath the trees. Pine neeedles soften the ground, resin warms on bark, herbs release their scent when touched, and the wind carries the aroma of wood, moss and foliage through the landscape.
You don't need to see the forest to know you are there.
You can smell it.
At Halkos botanicals, this is where our work begins.
Our perfumes are created as olfactive impressions of Cyprus - its mountains, forests, villages and coastline - using botanical materials and traditional extraction methods. Each fragrance is shaped by season, place and the plants available at their natural aromatic peak.
Among these botanicals are some of the most characteristic aromatic plants of the Mediterranean forest: pine, cypress, cedarwood, oak, plane tree, and other resinous and aromatic species.
These plants contain something fascinating: phytoncides.
What are phytoncides?
Phytoncides are a broad term for volatile substances naturally produced and released by plants. They are particularly associated with forests, where trees continuously relese complex mixtures of volatile organic compounds into the surrounding air. Conifers are especially important sources of compounds such as α-penine, β-pepine and limonene.
These molecules are part of what gives a pine forest its unmistakable aromatic character. The fresh, green, resinous sensation we instinctively associate with ''forest air'' is not an abstract idea. It has a physical chemistry. This chemistry is one of the reasons natural botanical perfumery can feel so different from simply reproducing a fragrance accord with isolated aroma materials.
Pine - the breath of the forest
Pine is one of the clearest expressions of the Cypriot landscape.
In Halkos, compositions such as PYRGA and TROODOS, pine forms part of the aromatic vocabulary of inland and mountainous Cyprus. PYRGA evokes the transition between forest, farmland, and village at approximately 270 metres altitude, while TROODOS moves higher into the cool mountainous landscape of the inland.
Pine essential oil is naturally rich in monoterpenes, including α-penine and β-penine - compounds frequently discussed in research on forest volatile compounds and phytoncides.
At Halkos, we are interested in more than one molecule. We are interested in the whole impression of the plant.
Pine is resin, needle, bark, sunlight and wind. It can smell bright and expansive at first, then become warmer, deeper and more resinous as the perfume settles on the skin. That transformation is what makes botanical materials so compelling.
Cypress: green, dry, and quetly Mediterranean
Cypress spaeks another dialect of the forest.
The aroma is greener, drier and often more austere than pine, with a distinctive balsamic and woody character.
In PYRGA, fresh pine and smoky Cypress create the forest-led opening before the fragrance moves into sun-kissed herds and warm resins.
In PARALIA , cypress takes us towards the coast, where green, woody and balsamic notes meet bright citrus and Cypriot jasmine.
The same botanical language can therefore tell different stories depending on wha tsurrounds it.
Mountain.
Village.
Coast.
This is central to the Halkos approach: the plant is never separated from its landscape.
Cedarwood: the warmth beneath the canopy
If pine gives is the breath of the forest, cedarwood gives us its depth. The scent of cedarwood is dry, warm, woody, and often gently smoky. It has an extraordinary ability to anchor a perfume and create the sensation of old wood, bark and shaded ground.
Cyprus has its own endemic cedar, Cedrus brevifolia, found in the Troodos region. Halkos' TROODOS composition is inspired by this mountainous landscape and its cedar valleys, alongside pine, oak, juniper, plane tree and other plants of the forest growing at an altitude of above 500 to nearly 2000 metres.
Here, the perfume becomes less about ''smelling like cedar'' and more about evoking a place: cool mountain air, ancient trees, resin, stone, damp earth and the quiet density of woodland.
Oak, moss and the forest floor
A forest is not only thescent of its tallest trees. It is also bark, leaves, moss, soil and decay - the rich, dark materials that make a forest feel alive.
Oak and oakmoss bring this dimention into botanical perfumery.
In TROODOS, oakmoss, cedar and plane tree help create the darker, earthy side of the composition. The fragrance moves from bright juniper and pine towards a frosty, mossy and woody drydown. This is where the perfume begins to feel less like ''a perfume with pine'' and more like a walk through the forest.
And then there are the extracts
One of the things that makes botanical perfumery so fascinating is there is no single way to capture a plant. At Halkos, botanical fragrances can incorporate essential oils, absolutes, CO2 extracts, tinctures and macerations, depending on the composition and the plant material. Each extraction method reals somethign different.
An essential oil may capture the highly volatile aromatic fraction of a plant.
An absolute can bring forward more delicate, complex and sometimes heavier aromatic facets.
A CO2 extract can offer another way of working with botanical material, depending on weather a total or selective extraction is used.
Tinctures and macerations can tell you another story.
This is why we don't think of botanical perfume as simply ''natural fragrance''. We think of it as botanical extraction translated into olfaction.
Are the phytoncides still there in a perfume?
It matters on precision. A perfume containing pine, cypress or cedarwood botanical extracts may contain naturally occurring volatile compounds that are also associated with the phytoncide chemistry of forests.
We do not say that a perfume is equivalent to being in a forest. The concentration, composition, exposure time and route of exposure are completely different. Nor is ''phytoncide'' a single ingrediant that can simply be maesured as present or absent. It is a broad term, covering many plant-derived volatile substances.
So, At Halkos, we prefer to say: Our botanical perfumes contain plant-derived volatile compounds associated with the aromatic chemistry of forests.
We let the forest remain what it is: complex, living and mysterious.
The scent of wellbeing
There is someting deeply instinctive about the smell of trees.
Research into forest bathing has explored the ralationship between forest-derived volatile compounds and human physiology, including compounds such as α-penine and limonene. Some studies suggest potentially beneficial effects, while researchers continue to investigate the mechanismsand the extent of these effects.
But perfume is perfume. We dont't wear Halkos fragrances as a substitute for walking through the forest. We wear them, because scent can bring a lanscape closer. Because a fragrance can transport us.
Because one breath can suddenly remind us of a mountain path, a summer afternoon, a childhood garden or the smell of trees after rain. This is a different kind of wellbeing. It is a memory. It is atmospehere. It is connection to place.
Cyprus, distilled
Cyprus has an extraordinary history of perfumery.
Archeological discoveries near Pyrgoshave revealed evidence of one of the world's oldest known perfume production sites, dating back to the Bronze Age. Traces of plants, including pine, lavender, and rosemarywere found on ancient distilling aparatus used for perfume production.
Thousands of years later, the island is still speaking through plants. At Halkos, we listen through distillation, extraction and composition.
Our perfumes are produced in small seasonal batches, with hte availagility of botanicals, climate and harvest influencing what can be created each year. The result is intentionally not a perfectly repeatable industrial formula. Each edition becomes a record of a particular season and place.
This is why a Halkos perfume is not simply inspired by Cyprus.
It is an iterpretation of the island through its botanicals.

Cedar.
Oak.
Moss.
Resin.
Herbs.
Earth.
These are not just perfume notes. They are fragments of a landscape. The volatile molecules within them are part of the living chemistrythat makes forests smell like forests. Some belong to the broad family of compounds we call phytoncides. Others contribute to the thousands of subtle interactions that make every botanical material unique.
